Jaguar C-X17 Concept

The Jaguar Advanced Design team, led by Julian Thomson & Sandy Boyes, asked Meridian to collaborate on the interior design proposal for the C-X17 Sports Crossover Concept that has since gone into production as the Jaguar F-Pace.

The design brief was to develop a bespoke, state-of-the-art audio system that sonically and aesthetically integrated into the Interactive Surface Console concept that allows the vehicle occupants to upload pictures, video and sound files from their mobile devices and share them with their fellow passengers, as well as on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media channels.

Using the touchscreens and an intuitive user interface, information can be shuttled forwards and rearwards between the front and the rear passengers. By enabling sharing between the occupants of the C-X17, both in terms of technology and information, the Interactive Surface Console puts as much focus on the rear compartment as on the front and allows all four occupants to share their personal media.

The C-X17’s 3D surround sound system featured an all-new architectural speaker location furthering the design principles of the proprietary Trifield 3D technology. The 28-loudspeaker system uses innovative speaker locations such as the integration of speakers into the A and B pillars to raise the acoustic and visual height.

The Meridian subwoofer ‘force cancelling’ technology is ‘gem-set’ within the rear center tunnel to provide consistent and accurate low frequency reproduction for every passenger. Height speakers have been set in the top of the head restraints to deliver the correct perception of image height, enabling each passenger to enjoy a personal and even more authentic musical experience.

Technology

  Digital Signal Processing

Digital, active DSP crossovers were designed to distribute music to each speaker giving higher overall quality, less power use, and the performance of Meridian consumer loudspeakers.

  Trifield

Meridian’s exclusive Trifield technology blends the centre and surround channels seamlessly with the left and right channels to deliver a consistent, concert-like experience, optimised for all seating positions.

Trifield 3D  Trifield 3D

Building upon the proven Trifield technology, Meridian Trifield 3D is a world’s first technology that adds dedicated height channels located in the roof lining to provide a realistic portrayal of image height to the musical performance. The Meridian™ 1,700W Signature Reference System also has dedicated seat back centre loudspeakers located in the front seats to provide rear seat passengers with their own centre channel reproduction.

  Seat Back Centre Loudspeakers

A loudspeaker module containg two midrange speakers and one tweeter in the rear of each seat back recreates the centre channel output for the rear seat passengers using Trifield processing technology.

  Meridian Cabin Correction

Meridian Cabin Correction technology optimises the audio system by measuring the acoustic time domain of the cabin and correcting the low frequency response preserving the timing and natural rhythm of a musical performance ensuring that bass notes to be reproduced cleanly.

  Digital Dither Shaping

Meridian Digital Dither Shaping is based upon psychoacoustic research to arrive at critically calculated noise shaping filters which provides an incredibly silent background to the recordings improving dynamic range and maximising musical detail.

Reviews

“Jaguar’s concept C-X17 SUV (sports utility vehicle), which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this afternoon, features a 3D in-car surround system developed by Meridian. The British hi-fi specialist worked closely with Jaguar’s engineers to develop the 28-speaker system for the prototype Jaguar C-X17’s interior. It uses Meridian’s Trifield 3D technology to create ‘3D surround sound’ for everyone in the cabin.

Speakers are integrated into the car’s A and B pillars to bring them up to passengers’ ear height, while the subwoofer is set within the rear centre tunnel to provide ‘a more consistent and accurate bass response for all passengers’, Meridian says. There are also four additional speakers set into the head restraints.”

“Jaguar teased us that there would be a modular aluminum vehicle revealed at the Frankfurt auto show. But then they tricked us and revealed the vehicle today before the show. The Jaguar C-X17 crossover does indeed Evoque a certain image to us from corporate cousin Range Rover. But the architecture is distinctly different.

What we do know is our friends at Meridian have installed the most badass automotive sound system in the C-X17 that the company has performed to date. Below are the technical specifics and information from Meridian. We are very excited to hear it in real life- hopefully the C-X17 will be at a stateside auto show.

Britain’s ultra-premium audio experts, Meridian, have redefined the future of in-car audio with its 3D in-car surround system built in the Jaguar C-X17. Meridian has developed and designed their innovative car audio system in close conjunction with Jaguar’s C-X17’s interior to provide a unique harmonic space.

The 28 loudspeaker system presents innovative loudspeaker locations within the vehicle cabin such as the integration of loudspeakers into the A & B pillars to deliver a better and more authentic sound by raising the sonic image at a human height making the experience more believable. The Meridian’s subwoofer “force cancelling” technology has been gem-set within the rear centre tunnel to provide a more consistent and accurate low frequency reproduction for all passengers; ultimately the raised loudspeakers have been located in the top of the head restraints to deliver the correct perception of image height enabling each passenger to enjoy a personal and even more authentic musical experience.

‘The all-new sonic architecture allows Meridian’s DSP technology to further exploit its full capabilities of delivering authentic, evocative and believable sound for everyone. A jewel of sound specifically created for the Jaguar C-X17.’ – Graham Landick, Meridian Automotive Programme Manager.”

“The C-X17 takes interactivity to a new level. The judges recognised how its concept interior is able to blend high-end interactive technology with premium traditionally crafted materials. The unique Interactive Surface Console brings interior automotive design right into the modern age, running the length of the car’s centre tunnel, and made up of a series of interconnecting touch-screens, the Surface Console connects rear passengers with the driver and front seat passengers via a secure in-car Wi-Fi network, so occupants can upload pictures, video and sound files from their mobile devices and share them with their fellow passengers as well as on all social media channels.

Enabling sharing, both in terms of technology and information, between the occupants of the C-X17, the Interactive Surface Console puts as much focus on the rear compartment as on the front and immerses all four passengers in a unified multisensory experience.”
